600 sq ft 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath + Office

This custom 600 sq ft Inglewood ADU was built with a very specific purpose: creating a comfortable long-term home for an older disabled marine veteran to age in place close to family.

Detached ADU Builder in Inglewood, CA

Built by Neo Builders in just 6 months, this detached new construction ADU combines accessibility-focused design, modern finishes, and multi-generational living into one highly personalized backyard home.

Instead of functioning like a traditional rental unit, this ADU was intentionally designed to keep family connected while still giving the homeowner an independent living space.

This custom detached ADU in Inglewood was designed to support multi-generational living and aging in place for an older marine veteran living close to family.

The goal wasn’t rental income. It was keeping family close.

Located in the son’s backyard in Inglewood, the project creates what many Los Angeles homeowners are now looking for: a functional multi-generational family compound that supports aging parents without sacrificing comfort, privacy, or design quality.

Inside the Open Concept Living Space

One of the biggest design priorities in this Inglewood ADU was making the home feel open, bright, and comfortable for everyday living.

Even at 600 square feet, the layout feels significantly larger thanks to the open-concept floor plan, oversized windows, and 10-foot ceilings.

The open-concept layout, 10-foot ceilings, and integrated living room design help this 600 sq ft ADU feel bright, spacious, and comfortable for long-term living.

  • Massive picture window

  • 10-foot ceilings

  • Open-concept floor plan

  • Strong indoor-outdoor connection

  • Accessibility-focused circulation paths

Custom Media Wall Designed Around the Homeowner

Because this ADU was built for long-term living, the homeowner wanted the living room to feel comfortable, functional, and entertainment-focused.

NeoBuilders designed a custom entertainment wall with surround sound integration to create a comfortable living space tailored for long-term everyday living.

One of the client’s biggest requests was a large TV and dedicated media center. To accommodate this, NeoBuilders designed a custom entertainment wall complete with built-in surround sound speakers and plenty of storage space for media equipment.

Rather than maximizing sleeping capacity like a rental-focused ADU, this home was designed around how the homeowner would actually spend time day to day.

Why Open Layouts Work Well for Aging in Place

Open floor plans are especially beneficial for homeowners planning to age in place.

The open kitchen and living layout was designed to improve accessibility, circulation, and long-term comfort for aging in place.

With fewer narrow hallways and tighter transitions, movement throughout the home feels easier, safer, and more comfortable over time. This type of layout also creates better visibility and improves accessibility for anyone using mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs.

As an experienced Inglewood ADU builder, NeoBuilders designs every ADU around the homeowner’s actual lifestyle needs. In this project, that meant prioritizing openness, accessibility, and long-term comfort over maximizing room count or rental privacy.

Custom L-Shaped Kitchen Designed for Everyday Living

The kitchen in this Inglewood ADU was designed to function like a true full-time residence, not a simplified kitchenette often found in smaller backyard units.

This fully customized kitchen was designed for long-term everyday living with full-sized appliances, accessible circulation, and personalized finishes.

Every finish, appliance, and layout decision was selected specifically for the homeowner’s long-term comfort and daily routine.

Fully Customized Around the Homeowner

One of the standout aspects of this project is how personalized the kitchen feels.

The homeowner selected all of the finishes and details, creating a space that feels highly custom and reflective of his personal style. NeoBuilders worked closely with the client throughout the design process to ensure the kitchen balanced aesthetics, functionality, and accessibility.

Personalized finishes like the baby blue cabinetry, black fixtures, and quartz countertops helped create a kitchen tailored to the homeowner’s style and everyday needs.

This collaborative approach is something NeoBuilders prioritizes on every project. Whether homeowners already have a clear design vision or want guidance from an interior designer, the goal is always to create an ADU that feels intentionally designed for the people actually living there.

A well-designed ADU should feel like home. Not an afterthought.

Kitchen Design Features

The kitchen follows an open L-shaped layout that keeps the space feeling connected to the main living area while still providing plenty of functionality for everyday cooking.

The open L-shaped kitchen layout creates a functional cooking space while maintaining connection to the main living area of the ADU.

The design combines soft colors, modern finishes, and practical storage solutions to create a kitchen that feels both calming and highly usable.

ADU Kitchen Highlights

  • Baby blue custom cabinetry

  • Black fixtures and hardware

  • Calacatta Lux quartz countertops

  • Full-height subway tile extending to the 10-foot ceiling

  • LED under-cabinet lighting

  • Awning window above the sink for ventilation

  • Stainless steel 30-inch sink

  • Open-concept L-shaped layout

The full-height backsplash helps draw the eye upward, emphasizing the tall ceilings and making the entire space feel larger and more elevated.

Full-Sized Appliances for Real Everyday Living

Unlike many rental-focused ADUs that rely on compact appliances, this kitchen was designed to support full-time independent living.

The kitchen includes full-sized appliances to support comfortable long-term living, including a full refrigerator and stacked washer and dryer.

NeoBuilders incorporated a complete appliance package that gives the homeowner the same level of functionality you would expect in a traditional single-family home.

ADU Appliance Package

  • 36-inch full-size refrigerator

  • 27-inch full-size washer and dryer

  • 18-inch dishwasher

  • 24-inch oven

  • Microwave hood above range

Including full-sized appliances was especially important for this homeowner because the ADU was intended to function as a permanent residence rather than a temporary or short-term living solution.

Why Full-Sized Kitchens Matter in ADUs

One of the biggest differences between a rental-style ADU and an aging-in-place ADU is how the kitchen is designed.

Modern kitchen inside an Inglewood ADU with full-sized appliances, custom cabinetry, and accessible layout designed for aging in place.
Unlike many rental-focused ADUs, this kitchen was designed with full functionality, storage, and everyday usability in mind for long-term living.

Smaller rental units often prioritize saving space over long-term usability. That can mean compact appliances, limited storage, and reduced cooking functionality.

In this case, the homeowner needed a kitchen capable of supporting everyday life comfortably for years to come.

The larger appliances, generous countertop space, accessible layout, and open circulation paths all contribute to a kitchen that feels practical, comfortable, and future-focused.

For homeowners considering a custom ADU in Inglewood or Los Angeles, designing around long-term livability can make a major difference in how the space functions over time.

Accessible Bathroom Design With Luxury Finishes

The bathroom in this Inglewood ADU was designed around two priorities: accessibility and long-term comfort.

Accessible bathroom inside a custom Inglewood ADU featuring a floating vanity, smart toilet, and modern aging-in-place design.
This modern bathroom combines accessibility-focused design with warm finishes and clean contemporary detailing for comfortable long-term living.

Rather than creating a space that feels overly clinical or institutional, NeoBuilders focused on blending aging-in-place functionality with warm, modern finishes that elevate the overall design of the home.

The result is a bathroom that feels spacious, comfortable, and highly customized to the homeowner’s future needs.

Accessibility features don’t have to sacrifice good design.

Accessibility-Focused Bathroom Layout

At 9 feet by 6 feet, the bathroom was intentionally designed with plenty of open maneuvering space to improve comfort and mobility throughout the room.

Accessible bathroom layout inside a modern Inglewood ADU with floating vanity, open maneuvering space, and aging-in-place design features.
The bathroom was intentionally designed with additional clearance and open circulation to support aging in place and long-term accessibility.

This additional clearance becomes especially important for homeowners planning to age in place or anyone who may eventually need assistance from mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs.

One of the most practical features is the pocket door, which eliminates the swing space required by a traditional hinged door and makes entering and exiting the bathroom significantly easier.

Bathroom Accessibility Features

  • Pocket door entry

  • Spacious 9 ft x 6 ft layout

  • 36-inch clearance near smart toilet

  • Floating vanity for improved accessibility

  • Multiple grab handles throughout shower area

  • Open circulation space for long-term mobility needs

The floating vanity also helps maintain a lighter, more open visual feel while improving accessibility underneath the sink area.

Custom Shower Designed for Aging in Place

The shower became one of the standout features in the entire ADU.

NeoBuilders combined luxury materials with accessibility-focused functionality to create a space that feels modern, calming, and easy to use long term.

This custom walk-in shower combines accessibility-focused features with modern finishes, including grab bars, a built-in bench, and full-height chevron tile.

Chevron textured tile extends all the way to the 10-foot ceiling, drawing the eye upward and helping the shower feel larger and more dramatic. The lighter wall tones are contrasted with dark hardware for a clean contemporary look that matches the rest of the ADU.

Shower Features

  • Chevron textured tile to ceiling

  • Built-in shower niche with LED lighting

  • Handheld shower head

  • Integrated shower bench

  • Custom barn door style glass enclosure

  • Dark hardware finishes

  • No-threshold shower entry

The shower bench was topped using the same Calacatta Lux quartz used in the kitchen countertops, helping create visual consistency throughout the home.

Why Curbless Showers Are Ideal for Aging in Place

One of the most important accessibility features in this ADU is the no-threshold shower design.

The no-threshold shower entry creates a seamless transition that improves safety, accessibility, and long-term comfort for aging in place.

Instead of stepping over a raised curb, the transition into the shower is completely seamless. This type of curbless entry significantly reduces tripping hazards and creates a safer experience for older homeowners.

It also makes the bathroom much more adaptable for future mobility needs, including walkers or wheelchairs.

For homeowners building an ADU for aging parents or long-term living, curbless showers are often one of the most valuable accessibility upgrades available.

Blending Accessibility With Modern Design

Many homeowners assume accessibility-focused design will make a home feel overly medical or utilitarian.

This project shows the opposite.

Custom tile work, integrated lighting, and accessibility features helped create a bathroom that feels both luxurious and highly functional.

By combining high-end finishes, thoughtful lighting, custom tile work, and clean modern detailing, NeoBuilders created a bathroom that feels elevated while still supporting the homeowner’s long-term comfort and independence.

That balance is especially important when designing a modern detached ADU in Los Angeles intended for aging in place.

Comfortable ADU Bedroom Designed for Independent Living

The bedroom in this Inglewood ADU was designed to feel comfortable, functional, and easy to navigate for long-term everyday living.

The bedroom was designed to prioritize comfort, accessibility, and long-term independent living for the elderly tenant.

Rather than minimizing the sleeping area to create more square footage elsewhere, NeoBuilders prioritized comfort and accessibility to better support independent living for the homeowner.

At 10 feet by 12 feet, the bedroom provides enough space for larger furniture layouts while still maintaining open circulation throughout the room.

Bedroom Features Designed for Comfort

Natural light plays a major role in making the space feel calm and welcoming.

Large windows, high ceilings, and dedicated climate control help the bedroom feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming throughout the day.

A large 5-foot by 4-foot sliding window helps brighten the room throughout the day while also improving airflow and connection to the outdoor space.

Bedroom Highlights

  • 10 ft x 12 ft bedroom

  • 32-inch entry door

  • Large sliding window

  • Lighted closet

  • Dedicated AC unit

  • Ceiling fan and lighting on dimmer switches

The 32-inch door opening also improves accessibility and creates a more comfortable transition into the room compared to narrower bedroom entries commonly found in older homes.

Flexible Office Space That Can Adapt Over Time

One of the most practical aspects of this 600 sq ft Inglewood ADU is the additional office space included in the floor plan.

This flexible office space was designed to adapt over time and could easily function as a guest room, caregiver room, or additional bedroom.

While the room currently functions as an office, it was intentionally designed to remain flexible as the family’s needs change over time.

For many Los Angeles homeowners, adaptability is one of the most valuable features an ADU can offer.

A Multi-Use Space Built for Flexibility

At 9 feet by 9 feet, the office provides enough space to comfortably function as more than just a workspace.

The office includes a closet and dedicated climate control, allowing the space to easily transition into a guest room, caregiver room, or additional bedroom.

Because the room includes its own closet and dedicated AC unit, it can easily transition into another functional living area in the future.

Potential Future Uses for the Office

  • Home office

  • Guest room

  • Caregiver room

  • Kids bedroom

  • Hobby room

  • Wellness or reading space

This type of flexibility becomes especially important in multi-generational living environments where household needs may evolve over time.

Additional office features include the following:

  • 9 ft x 9 ft layout

  • Two operable windows

  • Cross breeze ventilation

  • Closet included

  • Dedicated AC unit

Even though the room is compact, the natural light and ventilation from the two windows help it feel comfortable and highly functional.

Why Flexible Spaces Matter in ADU Design

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when designing an ADU is planning too specifically for only one stage of life.

Small office inside a custom Inglewood ADU with dedicated AC unit, large window, and flexible layout designed for long-term adaptability.
Flexible spaces like this office help the ADU adapt to changing household needs over time, from workspace to guest room or caregiver suite.

Needs change over time.

A room that starts as a home office may later become a caregiver room, guest bedroom, or space for extended family members. Designing flexible rooms from the beginning helps homeowners get significantly more long-term value from their ADU investment.

As an experienced Inglewood ADU builder, NeoBuilders focuses heavily on creating layouts that can adapt alongside the families living in them.

Building an ADU in Inglewood

This 600 sq ft Inglewood ADU is a great example of how thoughtful design can create far more than just additional square footage.

This detached ADU was designed to support multi-generational living by balancing accessibility, independence, and close family connection.

Rather than functioning like a traditional rental unit, this detached ADU was intentionally planned as part of a multi-generational family compound, creating a balance between independence, accessibility, and everyday connection.

As more Los Angeles homeowners explore options for aging parents, adult children, or long-term family housing, projects like this show how a custom ADU can become a practical and highly personal solution.

Because the best ADUs are designed around how people actually live.

If you’re interested in building an ADU for aging in place, multi-generational living, rental income, or additional family space, NeoBuilders works closely with homeowners to create fully customized backyard homes tailored to their specific goals and lifestyle.
